Huddersfield Town 6-0 Wycombe - The Report The curse of Sky television was banished, well for this time anyway, as Town walloped struggling Wycombe 6-0 in a midday kick off live in front of the Sky cameras.
A second successive six-goal romp, as Town beat Dagenham and Redbridge the previous Friday night 6-1 in the FA Cup, at the expense of a Wycombe side finding it difficult to cope with life in League One.

Wycombe were left stunned as more incisive attacking by the top six side Town, a third clean sheet on the trot to boot, ripped through Wycombe with venom time after time with the Wycombe backline really struggling against the Town attack. Ironically Wanderers gained more corners than their hosts, 13 to 10.

It was the skipper, the outstanding Peter Clarke who got the party started. On 22 minutes the referee ordered a free-kick to be re-taken 30 yards from goal after the initial taken free-kick got Gary Roberts and Anthony Pilkington in a mix-up, Roberts curled the free-kick into the box from the right and Peter Clarke got ahead of his marker to power a header over Wycombe stopper Jamie Young.

Six minutes later, a goal to grace any level, Alex Smithies quick throw after a Wycombe corner sent Michael Collins speeding away down the left. A one touch pass to Pilkington who laid the ball across the box for Roberts to sweep the ball into the back of the net. Simply brilliant.

The 2-0 interval scoreline should have been more than doubled.

Chances came and went, leading goalscorer Jordan Rhodes, who was presented with a memento to mark his history-making hat-trick of headers against Exeter last month, it must have been the kiss of death as the 19-year old was destined not to get into the act, missing the clearest with a diving header straight at the sprawling keeper.

While showing some ideas in going forward, Wycombe defended like a pub team and at times were making their own downfall, but they were faced with high powered, fast attacking football with Roberts tearing another side apart with his skill and touch as the goals simply flowed.

Pilkington made it 3-0 after determined work by Rhodes on 50 minutes, striking a beautifully curled shot from the edge of the area.
Peter Clarke rammed in his second 12 minutes later after been denied a goal in the first half.

Theo Robinson came on for Lee Novak half way through the second half, missing a hatful of chances, putting a chance wide after been found unmarked in the box from a cross and then caught Wycombe keeper Young out by surprise, as Young through the ball out to boot it up field, Robinson snuck up from behind to pinch the ball off the keeper but Robinson dawdled on the ball allowing Wycombe to clear.

But Robinson was on hand for the fifth goal, as former Leeds defender Michael Duberry put into his own net as he strived to keep out the Town striker.

It become 6-0 when Collins was fouled in the box, the referee had no hesitation in pointing to the spot, the skipper Clarke, Roberts and Robinson wanted to take the spot kick but they came to agree to let Robinson take it to boost his morale, Robinson made no mistake driving the ball into the back of the net. It would have been the first hat-trick of his career if Peter Clarke had take the spot kick, some defenders don’t score three in their career never mind one game but Clarke sacrificed it for the good of the team.

Just a simply superb performance by Town, we look like scoring every time we go forward, I feel there will be other teams turned over like this at the Galpharm.

Sean’s Star Man - Peter Clarke
A rock at the heart of the Town defence, leads by example, dealt with everything thrown at him, scored two good goals and sacrificed his hat-trick for good of the team. That just shows the character of the man.
