Nico Vaesen
Date of Birth = 28/09/69

Belgian Nico joined Huddersfield in the summer of season 1998/99 from local side Eendracht Aalst for £80,000. He had also played in Belgium for Cercle Bruge and SK Tongeren and had settled into the Town side with ease.

He managed to notch 43 games during his first season in English football and won the Supporters' Player of the Year award.

Regarded as one of Huddersfield's best bargain buys he was unlucky to miss out on selection for Belgium's Euro 2000 squad.

He moved onto Birmingham City in June this year for free (another one of Ruberry's wise moves) and has started well for the Midlands team, he is currently fighting for the Number 1 jersey with last season Number 1, Ian Bennett.

Well, what can I say about Nico? When he first signed for us I thought he looked a bit dodgy, but how wrong was my first impression! He firmly established himself as our Number 1, and was the saviour of a lot of games with his brilliant shot-stopping ability (we needed him to be on form with our creaky old defence in front of him!). He was constantly being linked with other clubs, which I suppose just shows that he was catching the eye of other managers and scouts, but he just kept on putting in brilliant performances, game after game. But at the end of the day, he was sometimes prone for losing his head at the wrong times, like his constant rushing out of the box to tackle an oncoming striker, usually ending up with him being sent off! I hope that Nico will do a good job at Birmingham and im really hoping he can get that elusive call up to the Belgium squad.
