Date of Birth = 08/09/1971
Brought to the club by Steve (I need money to become a great manager) Bruce in July 1999 from Southend United. The £10,000 arrival had pushed Nico Vaesen for the green jersey since he joined the club but failed to dislodge his Belgium rival until the back end of the 2000 / 2001 campaign. He came on for his first appearance at Blackburn on April 16 and made his full debut a week later against Wimbledon at Selhurst Park.
Martyn signed for Southend at the end of July 1998. The big Welshman had appeared in 51 games for Manchester City since 1990 as well as 3 games at Bristol Rovers since being signed as an YTS trainee at the age of 18.
Martyn won 9 international caps for the Welsh youth team but spent much of his career at City playing for the A-team in the shadow of Tony Coton. It would appear that he never really shone for City but their fans were surprised to see him given a free transfer after the 1997 / 98 season saw the club relegated to the Second Division.
Since Nico's departure to Birmingham, Martyn has stepped into the giant Belgium's boots, and put in some superb performances in goal, and won over the Huddersfield faithful.
Not much is yet known about Martyn, but im sure that we will all be able to make up our own minds about him in the upcoming season.
Ash's Comments
I don't really know much about Martyn, but from what I have seen in friendlies this summer I feel he will do a good job for us during the new season. At 6ft, he's not the tallest keeper in the world, but he comes for crosses really well and I cant see him having problems in that department. I don't think he is as good as what Nico was at one on one shot stopping, but I suppose only time will tell.
Overall Rating
7/10 (This will change after seeing him in a few more games)
