Preston North End 2-1 Huddersfield Town
Huddersfield Town story posted by Sean Makin on 07/02/2016
Huddersfield Town let a 1-0 lead slip away from them in the dying moments as Preston North End stole all three points with an injury-time winner.
Town had the better of the possession but couldn't make their dominance pay with Preston having to thank their on-loan goalkeeper Anders Lindegaard for keeping them in the game.
Nahki Wells looked to have set the Terriers on their way to a first win at Deepdale since 1969 when he raced on to a Jamie Paterson ball to prod past the on-rushing Lindegaard with just 10 minutes remaining.
But the lead lasted all of three minutes when Paul Gallagher kept a Preston corner alive which deflected off Joel Lynch and into the net to level the scoring before Alan Browne rose highest to head in former Town defender Calum Woods' cross in injury-time.
The defeat leaves David Wagner's side without a win in five but Town have only themselves to blame as they weren't clinical enough in the final third.
Teams:
Preston: Lindegaard, Woods, Clarke, Wright, Cunningham, Robinson (Welsh 58), Browne, Gallagher, Reach (Doyle 87), Hugill (Johnson 58), Garner.
Subs not used: Kirkland, Vermijl, Kilkenny, Huntington.
Huddersfield Town: Steer, Smith, Cranie, Lynch, Husband, Hogg, Billing, Bunn (Manu 78), Paterson (Boyle 90), Lolley (Matmour 67), Wells.
Subs not used: Murphy, Davidson, Whitehead, Dempsey.
Three things we learnt:
1.Town aren't clinical enough in the final third.
Although Lindegaard had a good game for Preston, Town just aren't clinical enough in the final third and there is becoming an over-reliance on Wells to do the job.
The Terriers had twenty shots at goal, seven which were on target, with 64 per cent possession and only had one goal to show for it. They had their chances to put the game to bed but failed to do so and ended up coming away with nothing.
2.Defensive frailties still continue to plague.
Stating the obvious for Town fans, but only five other teams have conceded more goals than the Terriers so far this season. Last season three teams let in more goals and two of them were relegated sides in Blackpool and Millwall.
We've had a defence that concedes goals for fun since returning to the Championship and it has yet to be addressed. Wagner's attacking style of play may mean we do let in a few but we are letting in far too many and look susceptible to crosses a lately.
3.Attacking midfielders are too similar.
Bunn, Lolley and Paterson all look similar type of player in that attacking role behind the lone striker Wells. We can't judge Matmour just yet as he has featured in just three matches while Manu has only just joined on loan.
Since losing Butterfield, I feel we have lost just that spark in the final third. A player that has the ability to pull something out of the bag to change a game. Whatever you feel about Butterfield, he had that in his locker as well as the ability to take dictate play and to unlock defences.
Next up for Town is a trip to another happy hunting ground in Nottingham Forest, who are in form and have not lost in the Championship since the end of November.
