Huddersfield Town 2 v 1 Gravesend & Northfleet
Huddersfield Town story posted by Garfield (Admin) on 17/11/2001
Huddersfield Town managed to get through to the Second Round of the AXA sponsored FA Cup thanks to a late strike by on-loan striker Leon Knight in what was a very disappointing all-round performance in my view for the terriers. Knight struck for Town in the 90th minute of the game with a 15yard drive past Gravesend & Northfleet keeper Jamie Turner.
The game started out with a shock own-goal from Town defender Nathan Clarke - one minute fifty-six seconds into the game. Elliot Martin swung in a cross, Clarke panicked and headed the ball past Margetson and into his own net. From now until half-time the terriers had a number of attempts by Booth, Knight, Schofield, and Irons on the Gravesend goal but only to be denied by the in-form Fleet keeper Turner.
Town finally found a equaliser in the second-half through defender Adrian Moses. HTAFC utility player Moses struck a well hit shot into the right-hand corner of the net leaving Turner with no chance.
After this point Town had most of the possesion with Dwayne Mattis nearly putting Town ahead with a decent strike aimed at the bottom corner - only to be saved by Jamie Turner. The fleet also came close on numerous occasions through Matt Lee and substitute Paul Booth. The terriers finally got the goal that they had been looking for when Leon Knight swept the ball past Turner from close range to seal this matchup.
The Gravesend fans and players can at least say they out played us at times and could have easily picked up the victory over us. They proved to us that there isn't so much of a gap between the non-league and the Second Division. Lets hope the fleet can go on and finish top of the Ryman League.
Garfields MoM - Leon Knight for getting the all important winner.
