Port Vale 1 v 1 Huddersfield Town
Huddersfield Town story posted by Garfield (Admin) on 24/11/2001
Huddersfield Town had to settle for a point after Port Vale midfielder Michael Cummins cancelled out Leon Knight's strike in the 68th minute and denied the terriers of the full three points.
The first-half wasn't the most exciting football to watch with neither side really showing any determination to get the first goal. The first chance came in the 14th minute through a low drilled shot by Port Vale man Stephen Rowland. Port Vale nearly went in front in the 24th minute through Neil Brisco. Neil Brisco looked to have got the better of the Thomas Heary outside the box until he recovered to deny the Valiants midfielder a clear sight of goal with a perfectly timed tackle.
Horton's team looked the better of the two sides up until half-time with chances from Rowland and Brooker for Port Vale.
The second-half was slightly more livelier for the terriers. Dwayne Mattis came close to scoring and so did Kenny Irons from a fierce 30yd shot that troubled Vale keeper Goodlad.
Leon Knight finally broke the deadlock with a brilliant strike from just inside the Vale area in the 68th minute. The little striker took the ball past Burton and then looped the ball over the stranded Vale goalkeeper Goodlad.
The valiants now tried to get that all important equalier. Town were put under pressure for 12 minutes and then they finally scored. Matthew Carragher crossed the ball over from the right and Michael Cummins rose unmarked above Holland to beat Margetson with a quality header.
After this point Town tried to get the winner by piling on the pressure. In the end it wasn't good enough and the final score was Huddersfield Town 1 - 1 Port Vale.
