Around this time last year Huddersfield Town fans were celebrating the appointment of Mick Wadsworth as the club's new manager following the sacking of Lou Macari. At the time most fans thought that Mick's arrival was the start of a new era for the Terriers and that relegation was definitely not a possibility. In retrospect we now realise that the appointment of the ex-Oldham gaffer was possibly the worst decision ever to be made by the club.
Indeed, it was a start of a new era for Huddersfield Town, but not the kind of era we had all been expecting. Instead of witnessing top-draw football en route to the First Division we were fed dull, mind-numbing action week in, week out. Not many fans have experienced such a season like the one under Mick Wadsworth and, hopefully, we won't again.

One of Wadsworth's first signings for Huddersfield Town was the ex-Premiership centre-back Eddie Youds. Eddie, to me, was probably Mick's best capture under his reign as manager, even if he was prone to injuries. But, then again, it doesn't take much to better the signings of Scott McDonald (loan), Scott Bevan (loan), Kevin Gallacher, Lee Ashcroft (loan), Gianfranco Labarthe, Kevin Sharp and Jason Gavin (loan). I don't know how one person can make so many bad decisions, it's unbelievable.

A disappointed Martyn Margetson's Huddersfield Town contract was withdrawn at the end of June 2002. At the time we were left with no 'keeper besides the unproven youngster, Phil Senior, which meant new manager Wadsworth would have to sort something out fast. His answer to the Terriers' goalkeeper problems came in the form of a 6'5" clumsy-looking loan signing by the name of Scott Bevan. Although I used to get frustrated by the amount of time he took to kick the ball upfield, I suppose he didn't do too badly - in hindsight he could have done a lot worse.

So, this time last year the fans were optimistic about the season ahead, just like they are every season, with the upcoming one no exception. Last season the fans expected promotion to the First Division, this season a lot expect immediate promotion to the Second Division. Even if things are getting back on track at the moment, I wouldn't get too confident about a top-ten finish yet. Let's just see how the team gels first, shall we? |
