Huddersfield Town v Cambridge United
Huddersfield Town story posted by Garfield (Admin) on 08/08/2003
The start of the new season. The time of the year when all Town fans feel optimistic about the nine months ahead. However, over the past few seasons that optimism has quickly faded in to pessimism by the end of the respective campaign. This year, somehow, I think it will be a completely different story.
Things are looking good for a change since the appointment of Peter Jackson and Terry Yorath. All the current Town players look like they'll give 100% every game without fail. Sure, one or two of them may not be the most skilful but their effort and commitment will no doubt be there week in, week out. New signing Efe Sodje's flair and character may add another dimension to the Town team.
At 14.50pm tomorrow, before the start of the game, Peter Jackson will be introduced to the Huddersfield Town crowd with Baddiel and Skinner's "Football's coming home" song playing over the tannoy system. The fans will most probably adapt a "Jacko's coming come" ring to it. The new-style Town team will run out to Robbie William's "Let me entertain you", while "Smile awhile" and "Those were the days" will be played as a tribute to Ken Davy's rescue of the club.
Jackson hasn't officially announced the Town line-up for tomorrow but it will probably be similar to the team you've seen in the last few first-team friendlies, with the addition of Nigerian International Sodje replacing Hughes or Yates. Nathan Clarke is fit again but will not be rushed back into first-team action, so he will not feature. Rob Edwards will captain the Town side.
An interesting fact is that Town have only lost once in 16 matches against Cambridge, and that was back in April 1977!
Cambridge United have a near full-strength team for tomorrow's game. Warren Goodhind is the only injured player in Taylor's squad. New signing Stuart Bimson will be named the U's' captain.
Garfield's Prediction: I'm going for a 2-0 victory. I've never been so excited about an upcoming season. We look look pretty solid at the back and, judging by our pre-season form, we'll be unstoppable against the U's!
