Huddersfield Town 2 v 1 Derby County
Huddersfield Town story posted by Garfield (Admin) on 12/08/2003
Nigerian International, Efe Sodje, sporting his blue and white bandana, made his first-team debut in tonight's battle against the Rams in which the Terriers earned a well deserved victory thanks to goals from Jon Stead and John Thorrington. The commitment and effort of the Huddersfield Town players as they fought back from being a goal down was exceptional and, if we play like this against Boston United on Saturday, I can't see any other result than the same as tonight's.
Town, looking for their first competitive win, went a goal down in the 41st minute courtesy of an Ian Taylor effort. Rob Edwards, the new Terriers captain, brought down ex-Town man Gianfranco Tome Labarthe, which then resulted in a Gray save, followed up by Richard Jackson's pass to Ian Taylor, who then hit the ball into the Terriers' net from six yards out. The scoreline at the break, in my opinion, was a little harsh.
After half-time Town came out hungry for goals and that's exactly what they got. Jon Stead, AKA 'Steadinho', scored a delightful headed equaliser on 59 from ten yards out, which sent the 6672 Town crowd delerious. Thorrington sent in numerous crosses into the Rams' penalty box until, finally, Stead unleased an unstoppable header into the County net.
If Stead's goal wasn't enough to send the crowd mad, John Thorrington took Town into the lead in the 70th minute, which was met with joy by Town's gathering of fans. A foul by County's Ian Taylor gave loan man Lee Fowler the chance to guide the ball into Derby's box, which was then flicked on by the impressive Sodje for Thorrington to net from close range. Awesome.
For the rest of the half Town dominated the game. Newby had a few chances and Thorrington whipped in plenty of dangerous crosses. I was very impressed with the American winger - tonight's performance will almost certainly mean he will start against Boston United this coming Saturday.
I couldn't fault one player playing tonight. They were all brilliant. 'Steadinho' continuing his goal-streak was magnificient, too!
So, Peter Jackson's unbeaten run is still intact, the Terriers are through to the Second Round of the Carling Cup and the majority of Town fans will be delighted by tonight's display.
The final score of 2-1 will please most Prediction League users as over half of them predicted that scoreline! My prediction for this game ended up being correct so, from now on, call me 'Mystic Garf'!
