Huddersfield Town 3 v 0 Leyton Orient
Huddersfield Town story posted by Sean Makin on 27/09/2003
Huddersfield Town registered their second win of the season as they swept aside lowly Leyton Orient by three goals to nil. Steve Yates, Paul Scott and Andy Booth netted one goal each to secure the much-needed win at the McAlpine Stadium earlier today. An attendance of 8942 turned out to witness the victory.
It was not the best peformance by Town but they still steam-rolled over the visitors. It's two wins in a row now for the Terriers and, come Tuesday night, hopefully it will be three. With goals coming from defence, midfield and the strikers, the game against Kidderminster should produce the full three points for Town if they put in a good performance.
Town went ahead on 30 minutes with Steve Yates grabbing his first goal for the terriers with a simple tap in. But the opening 30 minutes was pretty boring to watch as both sides struggled in the first 20 minutes to get the break through.
Stead neally scored with just 5 minutes played. A poor pass back by Leyton Orient defender, Newey, but a great tackle by Peters stopped Stead from scoring.
Leyton Orient had their best chance of the game minutes later when Ibehere turned Yates but fired wide from around ten yards out past the post.
On 22 minutes Orient brought a great save out of Gray, when Newey found space and fired low and hard but Gray got down to the left hand post to make a good save.
Booth went close on 26 mintues. The cross from Holdsworth was headed down by Booth but it bounced straight into the hands of Harrison.
Town then scored on the half hour mark when Lee Fowler's set piece was headed across goal by Booth, which found Stead who then headed across the Orient goal line for Yates to tap it in for his first ever Town goal.
Just before half-time Paul Scott sliced the ball forcing Gray into a finger tip save.
The opening of the second half was sloppy with both teams giving the ball away but it was soon 2-0 on the hour mark.
Two corners in succession resulted in a goal. The first corner from Schofield found the head of Booth who rattled the cross bar before a Leyton Orient defender put it out for a corner. This time Holdsworth's corner found the head of Booth again, the ball smacked the crossbar and again it fell to Scott who fired it in from close range
Stead should have got on the score sheet with 25 minutes to go. Holdsworth squared it back to Stead who was waiting just inside the penalty area but his first time shot ballooned over the bar.
After Leyton Orient had used up all their subs, Town made it 3-0 on 82 minutes.
Stead's shot was parried by Harrison and Booth then put it home with a simple header.
A triple substitution by Town bringing on Newby, Mattis and Nathan Clarke for his first run out this season they replaced Booth, Holdsworth and Yates.
Worthington had a chance to make it 4-0 before the end. Good work by Newby found Worthington who fired the ball straight over the bar.
Overall not a bad performance by Town; it could have been better but at least we got the three points.
