Huddersfield Town story posted by Sean Makin on 25/10/2003
After 2 away defeats Town got back to winning ways keeping an excellent home record beating Carlisle United 2-1. The Terries desperately held on for all 3 points against a side that had only picked up one point from the last seven away games and who managed just one win in nine matches.
The First half Town dominated as Carlisle Sat back and defended and Town pilled on the pressure only the Carlisle keeper Glennon could stop Town going in about 4-0 at the break.
Both sides at half time interval were down to ten men; Steve Yates and Richie Foran were sent off for a fracas in the tunnel. Carlisle?s Richie Forlan started it off by barging into Peter Jackson on the way to the dressing rooms at half time, Yates got involved with Forlan to see what Forlan was playing at and Yates was head butted by Forlan.
The incident was spotted by the forth official, Yates was bleeding from a head wound and both players were sent off in the tunnel the first match I have been to where this has happened
Town never relived the second half, it was a poor second half by Town they struggled to get the form of the first half which Town had 23 goal attempts with only 2 hitting the back of the net. When Carlisle got the goal they put pressure on Town hitting the woodwork twice in the last 10 minutes and saves from Ian Gray stopped Carlisle sneaking a draw or possibly a win. A week on Tuesday its up to Carlisle for the LDV Vans Trophy.
Town were on the attack straight from the kick-off and within 2 minutes a Andy Holdsworth run down the right he tried to cross the ball but it was deflected behind by Darren Kelly. The corner was only cleared as far as the edge of the area by the Carlisle defence, Carrs picked the ball up passed it to Schofield on the left hand side of the penalty area, His cross look to hit an arm of a Carlisle defender the referee waved play on, Carss tried a shot from the edge of the area that went miles wide.
Minutes later Town should have been 1-0 up thanks to Andy Booth but it wasn?t to be. Stead hit a half volley sweet it flew like a rocket hit the inside of the post and rebounded kindly at the feet of Booth from 6 yards out.
Glennon must have saved three attempts by Booth from around 6 yards out, Before Glennon held onto the ball; Booth couldn?t believe he had missed.
On 12 minutes Efe Sodje went into the referee?s book. He fouled Foran on the right hand side with a late cruching tackle, and for arguing with the referee, which resulted into a yellow card. Shaun Smith swung the Free-kick from the left into the box but Tony Carrs cleared with a header.

Danny Schofield then tried his luck on goal on 16 minutes. A packed Carlisle penalty area but Schofield tried his luck, Turned on the left hand side of the penalty area and blasted a shot towards goal with his right foot, It took a wicked deflection off a Carlisle defender but the Carlisle keeper Glennon was on hand again to stop Town from scoring saving the ball with his legs.

The resulting corner from the right was curled into the area by Smith, a flick on by a Carlisle player found Kelly at the far post. He totally miscued his shot on the volley from six yards out it flew past goal and went out for a Town throw in near the corner flag.

The cross from Carrs found the head of Sodje from around 12 yards out, Sodje leaped like a salmon, and headed the ball powerfully towards goal heading for the bottom corner but Glennon got down well to his right to turn it round the post.

Stead?s quick free kick gave the ball to Schofield; Schofield drove the shot, which hit Booth from 10 yards out. Booth reacted first, quickly and smartly turned his man and drove the shot past Glannon and into the roof of net for his 6th goal of the season.
An Efe Sodje backpass was picked up by Gray, which resulted a free-kick to Carlisle from the edge of the area. The Town wall lined up with Stead getting the left hand post, the indirect free-kick was driven by Kelly but it deflected off Holdsworth and clear to safety.
Ex Town player Chris Billy was booked for dissent minutes later, which resulted in the free-kick, being moving ten yards forward. Stead drove the shot it deflected off a Carlisle defender, Worthington?s follow up rattled the crossbar before a Carlisle defender got it clear
On the stroke of half time Jon Stead got his 11th goal of the season. Stead held the ball well turned his name like he wasn?t there and drove a dipping shot into the bottom left corner as the Carlisle keeper Glennon just stood and watched.

Just after the hour mark good passing movement between Schofield and Worthington, Worthington gave the ball to Carrs 30 yards out, Carss drove a powerful shot but unfortunately it went straight to Glennon.
