Last Time In Town- Swindon
Huddersfield Town story posted by Sean Makin on 28/04/2005
The last time Swindon Town came to Huddersfield was on Saturday 23rd November 2002, which the stadium was then called the McAlpine Stadium.
Town lost the game 3-2 and the then boss Mick Wadsworth was under-fire. The bit I remember about this game that was Swindon took the lead after 49 seconds. In front of a 8,334 crowd Danny Invincible (remember him?) set up Eric Saban free on the wing who cut the ball inside the area for David Duke and you just knew with the time and the space he?d put the ball in the back of the net and he did just that beating Scott Bevan.
Invincible nearly doubled his lead, squeezing into the box and with 3 Town defenders round him poked the ball just wide for the relief of the Terriers.
With Town still feeling the effects of the early goal, on 13 minutes Town?s first shot was high and wide by Steve Jenkins. Swindon doubled their lead with a penalty on 23 minutes, Invincible, a thorn in Town?s side chased a lost cause, advancing into the penalty area his legs got tangled with Kevin Sharp? and the referee pointed straight to the spot.
Andy Gurney stepped up and smacked it straight down the middle sending keeper Bevan the wrong way.
Martin Smith pulled one back for the Terriers just after the half hour mark, Smith made his way to the edge of the area and delightfully chipped the ball over Bart Griemink?s head into the net. Town looked lively but with much possession but lacked that finishing touch.
Just inside the second half and Town nearly got a bit of luck, a cross field ball from Smith hit Robins defender Alan Reeves on the arm on headed goal wards, but Griemink managed to tip the ball away to safety to save the embarrassment.
Jon Worthington came on with only half an hour left replacing Simon Baldry, Worthington just making his third appearance. Town went all out to search for an equalizer, possibly the greatest chance came with 10 minutes left, a deep cross from Sharp found John Thorrington who had just come on as a sub, waiting at the back post but to the dismay of Town fans smashed the ball wide of the post.
But the Robins added a third on 87 minutes. A quick counter attack by Swindon, Danny Invincible again a torn in Town?s side. Skinned Sharp and laid the ball across the goal from the left for Sam Parkin to easily tap the ball in.
But in added on time and with most of the then McAlpine crowd gone, it was pinball in the Swindon penalty area and the ball hit the chest of Jon Stead and trickled in past Griemink.
