Paul Merson was one of the Sky pundits on Monday. He praised our play in the first twenty five minutes of the game and said that we were the best team in the division. Certainly we go into tomorrow?s match having picked up 17 points in our last 8 games whereas Walsall have only managed 9. They sit twelfth in League One, ten points behind us.
Unfortunately we will probably be missing both Danny Schofield and Chris Brandon tomorrow which will give Michael Collins a chance to re-establish himself. Adnam Ahmed and Lee Fowler are also out. The only good news on the injury front is that Tosh is back in training although he won?t be available for a week or two. I?m a bit puzzled by our striker situation; McAliskey went on loan to Torquay, played part of one game for them, and returned injured now Junior Mendes has gone to the Cobblers for a month. We are left with Pav, Andy and Gary, three good ones but who have we got spare?
Having said that Walsall are probably in a worse state than us. Recent loan capture, Simon Gillett, Anthony Gerrard, Michael Standing and Mark Wright are all likely to miss the trip to the Galpharm, whilst influential midfielder, Simon Osborn is ruled out through suspension after amassing five yellow cards. On top of that, manager Paul Merson has Andy Oakes, Darren Wrack, Daryl Taylor and himself out long-term and experienced defender, Steve Staunton fit enough only to figure as a substitute.
Last season we beat them 3-1 at the Galpharm but the Saddlers got their revenge early in 2005 beating us 4-3 at the Bescot Stadium. We had a two goal lead at one point!
I think we should win, but it won?t be a pushover.
Swansea entertain Oldham at the New Stadium, (still unnamed, as far as I am aware, but with a statue of Ivor Allchurch being unveiled outside the stadium on Saturday maybe that might give them some ideas) and Southend will be at Belle View. We need both our local rivals to do us a favour to consolidate our position as long as we continue to push on.
