Huddersfield Town 4 - 1 Welling United

A comfortable win in the end for Town against battling non-league side Welling United in the FA Cup first round. Two goals from favourite Andy Booth, a Schofield penalty and Andy Holdsworth's second goal in three games sealed the victory for the Terrier, while Chris Moore gave the travelling Wings' fans something to cheer about after 81 minutes, although it was nothing more than a consolation.Huddersfield Town 4 - 1 Welling United

Town started with a full first team, with Chris Brandon returning to fitness, Jon Worthington returning from suspension in place of Tony Carss and Gary Taylor-Fletcher taking top scorer Pawel Abbott's place up front.

After an incident free 12 minutes, Town began to pressure and a slick passing move in midfield saw Worthington have an attempt which was blocked on the edge of the area. The block fell as far as Danny Adams who unleashed a venomous first time drive from 30 yards. Unfortunately the shot whistled wide.

After a Carruthers chance for Welling, Town launched and attack quickly and the ball fell to the feet of Schofield on the left wing. Schofield's quick feet were too much for the two marking defenders and the tricky winger managed to reach the byline and drill in a cros which was cleared out for a corner by Solomon from two yards out.

Town continued the possession play along the left flank. Danny Schofield found Danny Adams on 21 minutes, and the combative midfielder hit a deep cross onto which Gary Taylor-Fletcher ran. He wriggled his way towards goal but his angle was become ever tighter and his eventual low drive was easily saved down low by Welling keeper Turner.

On 25 minutes it was Welling's turn the threaten. A measured through ball saw Mirfin make a necessary last ditch tackle at the feet of the attacker. From the resulting play Town won a corner on the right hand side which was taken by Schofield, who floated it towards the back post perfectly for Andy Booth to rise and power home the header.

Only seconds later it appeared that Boothy would have a second goal to celebrate when he latched on to Schofield's curling cross with a header, only to see it cleared off the line by Solomon.

After 39 minutes of play Gary Taylor-Fletcher's tricky skill gave him a shooting opportunity but again his wide angled shot was saved down low. Town continued the pressure before the break, and it was Taylor-Fletcher at the centre again. His awareness allowed him to pick out Schofield with a through ball that Schofield was able to divert into the path of Brandon. Unfortunately, the former Chesterfield man found Solomon in his way.

Town came out firing on all cylinders, and it only took three minutes to find a weakness. Chris Brandon's cheeky Cruyff turn in the box resulted in the winger being unceremoniously hacked down by Matt Lee. Danny Schofield stepped up and slotted the penalty calmly into the bottom right corner of the goal, sending the keeper the wrong way.

Three minutes later Town should have increased their lead when Booth, who had proved troublesome for the Welling back line, stole in behind to latch onto a deft Schofield through ball. Booth's shot on the turn was brilliantly saved from only four yards, and Brandon's follow up was deflected over the bar by the impressive Solomon. From the resulting corner Booth towered and saw another header cleared off the line.

After 62 minutes Town had a good shout for a handball turned down in the area when Taylor-Fletcher attempted to head a cross back across goal. Again Fletch found himself free at the back post, and should have scored from an Adams cross after 66 minutes, but he directed his header over the bar.

After 69 minutes the match was put to bed when Andy Booth grabbed is second of the game. A lofted ball over the top saw the veteran striker turn and strike a left-footed half volley into the bottom right corner of the goal. The visitors attempted to respond just seconds later when Kedwell drove into the area and struck a shot over the bar.

Town should have been 4 up when subsitute Pawel Abbott raced away behind the defence. Pav managed to skip round the keeper only to see his placed shot cleared of the line by the hastily retreating defenders. It looked like Town's superior fitness was beginning to show as Danny Schofield fashioned an opportunity for himself to loop and audacious effort from 20 yards which was tipped around the post by a stretching Turner. A minute later, Pawel Abbott did the same, only to see his low shot saved by Turner. From the resulting play however, Turner could do nothing as Andy Holdsworth latched onto a Schofield pass and slotted the ball into the net at the near post.

After 82 minutes the travelling fans were given something to cheer about, when an inswinging freekick found the head of Chris Moore who directed it past the stranded Rachubka.

Town desrved to win, but credit to Welling who put in a good account of themselves. Town's man of the match for me would have to be between Mark Hudson who's passing orchestrated many Town moves and Andy Booth, who's threat the Welling defence could not deal with.
