Report: Tranmere Rovers 3-1 Huddersfield Town

Stadium: Prenton Park
Coca Cola League One Game
Kickoff: 3.00pm
Date: Sunday, 15th March 2009
Report: Tranmere Rovers 3-1 Huddersfield Town No wins in 6 now for Huddersfield Town as they crashed to a 3-1 defeat at Prenton Park, Anthony Kay put the home side in front before Andy Booth equalized but Bas Savage and another Anthony Kay goal buried the Terriers and now surely their play-off dreams.
It hasn’t been a happy hunting ground for the Town over the years at Prenton Park the last time the Terriers took all 3 points from the Wirral was 10 years ago in a 1-0 win thanks to a Marcus Stewart goal.

Manager Lee Clark stuck with the 4-4-1-1 formation that took a point at MK Dons on Tuesday night, Tom Clarke kept his place in the side in midfield along side Michael Collins, Alex Smithies in goal with the back four of Holdsworth, Lucketti, Butler and Williams. Pilkington and Roberts were on the flanks with Craney playing off the front lone man Andy Booth.

Tranmere broke the deadlock with only 6 minutes gone, Kay took advantage of awful marking to break the deadlock with a header from Charlie Barnett’s corner. The goal rewarded Tranmere for a bright start.
Savage had been denied before the Tranmere goal by a superb save from Smithies but Town responded positively with patient build ups and drew level after a well worked attack in the 23rd minute.

Clarke gave Collins room to cross the ball towards Booth who was unmarked and converted a trademark header that got Town level.

Pilkington skinned former Town loanee Andy Taylor after a good pass from Clarke but Pilko’s shot was deflected away from the Tranmere goal.
Bizarre Rovers striker Bas Savage, who had his hair dyed blue, had the ball in the Town net from a Taylor corner but the lanky striker blatantly fouled Town keeper Smithies.

Before the break Williams tested the Rovers keeper Danny Coyne after Andy Butler was fouled 25-yards from goal.
Tranmere were testing Town with their physical presence but credit to the Terriers they were giving as good as they got.

Savage put the home side back in front on 50 minutes when the blue-haired striker was allowed space and drilled a left-footed shot beyond the reach of goalkeeper Smithies. Within 3 minutes of Savage putting Rovers in front Anthony Kay all but sealed victory, Kay latched on to a free-kick from Taylor and hammered home a fierce volley.

Robbie Williams fired just wide after good work from Ian Craney as Town fought desperately to salvage something from the game but Ronnie Moore’s men gave little away during the final stages. The victory over Town lifting Rovers to 6th in League One.

Town drop to 13th in League One, nine points adrift of the top six with nine matches still to play.

Town play host to Cheltenham Town at the Galpharm on Saturday, The Robins beat Hartlepool United 2-0 at Whaddon Road but are bottom of League One and after 13 points away from safety.
Surely now Town’s chances of the play-offs has now vanished, no wins in 6 now for the Terriers. Next season is an important one for Huddersfield Town.

Sean’s Star Man - Anthony Pilkington In good form of late, played well down the flank providing some good crosses but unfortunately no one to connect on the end of them.
