Town 6-0 Stockport County - Match Report
Huddersfield Town story posted by Sean Makin on 25/04/2010
Huddersfield Town secured their Coca Cola League One play-off spot in style with a 6-0 mauling of relegated Stockport County on a sunny Saturday afternoon at Edgeley Park. Town were backed by 3,424 fans making their way from West Yorkshire - only 39 more than the home fans and the Town fans were not disappointed.
Lee Clark stuck with the same side that beat Millwall 1-0 the previous Friday, Tom Clarke stayed a right-back with Lee Peltier still at left-back despite Dean Heffernan's return from injury.
The party got started with only two minutes gone, former County player Anthony Pilkington's shot took a deflection that left County keeper Owain Fon Williams stranded to put the Terriers in front. Town were well on their way when striker Theo Robinson poked the ball into the net after 36 minutes after good work from Danny Drinkwater and some dodgy Stockport County defending.
The margin at the break could have been wider, Jordan Rhodes struck straight at Fon Williams and Pilkington was a bit unfortunate with a close range header. Robinson's off-the-ball running was causing the County defence all kinds of problems and Drinkwater was pulling the strings in midfield.
Rhodes brought out a good save from Fon Williams, after receiving the ball just inside the County half, Rhodes beat two men before cutting inside from the left and having a shot but Fon Williams smartly saved. It would have been a superb solo goal from the Town hitman.
Not long after the break Neal Trotman was taken off after feeling unwell with Nathan Clarke making a first appearance since January. Stockport were totally hapless in the second half, outplayed in every department, I don't think I've ever seen a player so disinterested than County striker Ibehre. There were chants (although I never heard as Town fans sang right through the 90 minutes) from the Cheadle End to sack manager Gary Ablett and to bring back their former hero Jim Gannon.
Robinson made a clever run to deliver a cross that saw Gary Roberts go close with an overhead kick and then Robinson himself drove a shot than Fon Williams smartly tipped over the bar.
On 66 minutes Town were 3-0 up thanks to Rhodes' 23rd of the season. Pilkington made a good run down the left and his cross bounced off the post after Robinson and a County defender tangled for the ball, but it fell kindly to Rhodes who easily dispatched from close range.
Robinson could have made it four minutes later but his header was easily dealt with and Roberts was unlucky to have a shot cleared off the line.
There was no sitting back at Town pushed forward and upped the tempo in the second half. County didn't have a chance and Drinkwater put Town 4-0 up on 84 minutes with a superb free-kick that gave Fon Williams no chance after Tom Clarke had been flattened on the edge of the County box.
Drinkwater laid the ball on for Roberts to make it 5-0 moments later, Roberts' beautiful curling shot from the edge of the County box wouldn't go a miss in the Premiership.
Drinkwater was involved again after smart work down the right to get into the box, Sam Barnes decided to flatten the on-loan Manchester United midfielder and substitute Lee Novak smashed the spot kick into the net to make it 6-0.
The party atmosphere at Edgeley Park resulted in a pitch invasion after a little lad asked Gary Roberts for his shirt and the Town fans celebrated in the sunshine. As a Town fan for many years, you won't see Town win 6-0 away from home often!.
