Report: Huddersfield Town 0-1 Exeter City

Huddersfield Town chairman Dean Hoyle's pre-match attack on the Town players after a dismal 1-0 defeat the previous Saturday failed to inspire as Town crashed to a 1-0 defeat after failing to break down an average Exeter City side.Report: Huddersfield Town 0-1 Exeter City
No disrespect to Exeter, they were organised but were very ordinary and a team that Town should be beating at home if they want any chance of getting promotion this season. Our weakness again was a set-piece and was lucky that the scoreline stayed 1-0 before the break when Exeter had another goal from a corner disallowed by the referee.

Hoyle had questioned the players "fight and bottle" to get out of League One adding
that he "never felt as low as I did against Oldham". He also criticized the players who didn't acknowledge the fans at the end of the Oldham match (only Peter Clarke and Antony Kay did) adding that "they seemed like they couldn't wait to get off the pitch" as he apologized to the fans.

Performance wise has not been the best for the Terriers lately, Town were poor at Oldham, awful for the first hour against Cambridge and were poor in the first 45 against Exeter. To be fair to Town they threw everything but the kitchen sink at Exeter in the second half but yet failed to break down the Grecians.

Town boss Lee Clark chose a 4-5-1 formation with Rhodes up front on his own which meant Benik Afobe was on the bench. Graham Carey was preferred at left-back ahead of Liam Ridehalgh. Scott Arfield was the extra man in midfield and Anthony Pilkington was back after minor surgery to cure a hamstring problem.

The extra man in midfield failed to pay off and Town were slow out of the blocks. Peter Clarke had a chance blocked and Rhodes misjudged a header from a Carey cross.

Rhodes was unlucky not to have put Town in front on 27 minutes. Carey swung in a beautiful cross from the left but the striker saw his header hit the underside of the bar and away to safety.

Exeter had rarely troubled Town but took the lead on 36 minutes through Richard Duffy and it proved to be the winner. Again from a set-piece, a corner from the right found Duffy who planted in a free header at the near post.

The goal got the nerves going as they gave the ball away cheaply in their own half and the passing was awful.

Two minutes before the break Exeter were unlucky not have doubled their lead. The referee chalked off Troy Archibald-Henville's header (another free header may I add) from another Ryan Harley corner for pushing.

At half-time Clark threw on Alan Lee for Joey Gudjonsson who had a poor 45 minutes to partner Rhodes up front.

The change injected some life into Town but lacked in the final third and Exeter goalkeeper Krysiak was equal to Town's chances on goal.

Lee had a low drive smartly tipped wide by Krysiak after Exeter failed to clear from a Town corner.
Town had all the possession and the Grecians at times failed to get outside their own half as they put everyone behind the ball.

Rhodes should have the target but failed to with a chance and Pilkington's angled drive was tipped away by Krysiak. Jamie McCombe was thrown on from the bench to add to the Town attack to try salvage something from the game.

Arfield's effort was stopped by Krysiak and Lee went close but in stoppage time Arfield had a cracking volley from the edge of the area that rattled the crossbar with Krysiak rooted to the spot.

It was better in the second half but it wasn't the best we have played. I agree with Dean Hoyle's comments, I was there at Oldham and he has every right to voice his opinion, I would like to know what he said about the defeat to Exeter. Town must regroup and lick their wounds as MK Dons visit the Galpharm on Tuesday night.

Sean's Star Man - Scott Arfield
For me the only one that looked like doing something. Showing tenacity in willing to link up with attack and defence just shame his teammates around him weren't awake and was unlucky not to score right at the death.
