Report - Wolves 1-3 Huddersfield Town
Huddersfield Town story posted by Sean Makin on 13/04/2013
A quickfire double from Jermaine Beckford gave Huddersfield Town a vital victory in their fight for survival and deepened the woes for fellow battlers Wolves at the Molinuex.
With the score at 1-1 Beckford was introduced as a substitute and made an immediate impact scoring two goals in two minutes to grab a vital victory for the visitors.
It started well for the home side as Stephen Ward put Wolves in front inside four minutes but a brilliant individual effort from Sean Scannell levelled the game on 27 minutes which was Town's first shot on target.
Two changes were made from the side that drew with Peterborough United the previous Saturday. In came Adam Clayton back from suspension in place of Scott Arfield and Anthony Gerrard was back from injury and started in place of Murray Wallace.
The home side were first out of the blocks with Town slow to react often losing possession. From a free-kick with just a minute gone Wolves striker Bjorn Sigurdarson headed wide from Jamie O'Hara's cross.
Sigurdarson was involved in the build up as Wolves took the lead on 4 minutes. The Icelandic striker was given space by Town he fed away Kevin Doyle down the left wing and Doyle's low cross across the six yard box was converted by Ward as the Irishman snuck in between two Town defenders.
The home side continued the pressure but Town had their first chance on 17 minutes when Ollie Norwood's neat cross found James Vaughan but the striker slipped and his half volley flew harmlessly wide.
Something out of nothing and Town were back in the game on 27 minutes. Town were beginning to find their feet, Sean Scannell picked the up the ball down the left and drove forward beating Matt Doherty cutting inside the penalty area beating another challenge before slamming the ball into the net from an acute angle.
Wolves goalkeeper Dorus De Vries denied Clayton at his feet after the midfielder found himself in the penalty area from Vaughan's knock down and from the rebound Neil Danns fired over.
Danns was to have the last change of the area fooling Doherty before firing a low effort that forced De Vries into a save.
Wolves started the second half as they did the first with Peter Clarke superbly denying Ward at the near post as the goalscorer looked to pounce on Jack Robinson's cross. From the resulting corner the ball dropped to Doyle but the striker fired a horrible volley over the bar.
Town made two changes with 64 minutes gone Oscar Gobern came off after being caught by the Wolves goalkeeper during a Town corner to be replaced by Jermaine Beckford and Neil Danns made way for Keith Southern.
Wolves' Roger Johnson was in acres of space after Town failed to clear a Wolves corner but the defender failed to hit the target as his shot was more closer to the corner flag than the Town goal.
Scannell was off again down the left flank but a good recovering tackle from Doherty put the ball out for a corner. From that resulting corner Norwood picked out Vaughan, his header was parried by De Vries and there was Beckford first to react to blast the ball into the roof of the net to put Town in the lead.
Upon the restart Scannell cashed in on a loose ball skipped past Karl Henry and slid the ball between the defenders for Beckford to run on to. Beckford skipped past Johnson and dinked the ball over the stranded De Vries for his second goal in two minutes.
Things went from bad to worse for Wolves from the restart Southern went charging into O'Hara the free-kick was given but the former Spurs midfielder reacted angrily pushing Southern in the face. The referee Keith Stroud had no hesitation in showing O'Hara the red card Southern was also booked for his troubles.
Calum Woods brilliantly blocked Kasper Gorkss' goal-bound effort on 83 minutes as Wolves threw everything at Town even bringing on former loanee Adam Hammill and striker Nouha Dicko.
Beckford could have wrapped up his hat-trick in the final minute of the 90 but this time De Vries was equal to his effort parrying away the striker's left footed shot.
It could prove a massive three points for Town come end of the season but there is still a long way to go and more twists and turns to come.
