Report - Huddersfield Town 5-0 Barnsley
Huddersfield Town story posted by Sean Makin on 01/03/2014
Huddersfield Town recorded their biggest win of the season hitting five past hapless Barnsley who have now sunk to the bottom of the Championship table.
Town had five different goalscorers but it was striker Nahki Wells who stole the show, despite not finding the net Town's record signing claimed four assists to his name.
Manager Mark Robins was looking for a reaction after the poor defeat to Sheffield Wednesday a week prior with three changes made to the starting XI. In came Keith Southern, Calum Woods and Murray Wallace in a 4-5-1 formation as Jonathan Hogg was out through injury and Peter Clarke and Tommy Smith dropped to the bench.
Barnsley have turned to Danny Wilson in the hope he bring back the glory days of his first tenure in charge but the club find themselves very much in the same plight as last season - fighting to stay in the league.
The Tykes have formed Terrier Jack Hunt in their ranks on-loan from Crystal Palace but his comments in a Barnsley newspaper didn't go down too well and was booed by a section of the Town crowd. Chairman Dean Hoyle also didn't think highly of Hunt by his comments at a fans forum earlier in the day.
It was Barnsley who started the better side and looked comfortable in the opening half hour but it was Town who had the first chance. Danny Ward should have put Town in front after his persistence put him through of goal but the forward could only produce a weak chip over the goalkeeper which allowed a Barnsley defender to clear.
Hunt, on his first return to Huddersfield since leaving in August, produced a run and cross that provided a chance for Nick Proschwitz on 10 minutes but goalkeeper Alex Smithies produced a fine save to deny the striker on-loan from Hull City.
Proschwitz had another chance to find the target but Anthony Gerrard recovered well to block the shot.
It was on the half hour mark when Barnsley started to unravel as The Terriers struck twice in three minutes. Keith Southern got the rout started by turning Wells' shot into the net from close range after Hunt had fouled Adam Hammill just outside the area.
Moments later Oliver Norwood sent Wells away and the striker's cut back found Danny Ward who fired past Luke Steele.
Barnsley could have been well and truly out of it by the break had Wells found the back of the net. The striker had two chances but sadly failed to find the net that his performance deserved, his first chance was saved by the legs of Steele then his persistence caught Steele cold but his lobbed effort landed on the roof of the net.
Into the second half and Town carried on from where they had left off as Norwood sent Wells through and the striker held off the defender before laying the ball off for Hammill. His shot was parried by Steele but the goalkeeper didn't get enough on the ball to send it over the bar allowing Hammill to find the net at the second attempt.
The fire had gone out in the Barnsley players as the Terriers dominated possession but Emmanuel Frimpong did test Smithies with a 25 yard effort that the goalkeeper had to palm away at full stretch.
It was only to get worse for The Tykes when Town were awarded a penalty after Wells was brought down by Steele having been put through on goal by Adam Clayton. Clayton took the spot kick himself firing the ball into the top corner of the net.
Substitute Sean Scannell rounded off the victory with the goal of the game after cutting inside from the left flank and firing a low shot into the bottom corner from 20 yards out.
Up next for Huddersfield Town is another Yorkshire derby and another team who are fighting for survival - Doncaster Rovers.
