Match Report - Leeds United 3-0 Huddersfield Town
Huddersfield Town story posted by Sean Makin on 22/09/2014
Neil Redfearn signed off his role as caretaker manager of Leeds United with a thumping 3-0 win over Huddersfield Town at Elland Road.
Rudy Austin, Micro Antenucci and Souleymane Doukara hit the goals as Leeds bossed this West Yorkshire derby.
Town never got going from the first kick to the last and deserved to be beaten on that performance.
It says it all when the Leeds goalkeeper Marco Silvestri never had a single shot to save in all of the 90 minutes.
The football played by Town at times was pedestrian. Meaningful chances were too few and far between.
There was nothing in the match until the 19th minute when for some reason only known to Joel Lynch he tried to play for a throw-in deep in his own half instead of putting the ball out of play.
Leeds got lucky with the ricochet as the ball fell kindly into the path of Austin who drilled the ball into the back of the net from just inside the penalty area.
Harry Bunn, the only Town player to deserve any credit, gave the Leeds full-back Gaetano Berardi a torrid afternoon and had Town's best chance when the ball fell kindly for him in the Leeds penalty area but the youngster fired too high.
Bunn provided a neat cross that found the head of Jonathan Hogg but the midfielder headed wide from a good position.
But the home side hit Town with a sucker punch right on half-time. Leeds looked dangerous on the break all afternoon and caught Town cold leading to Antenucci scoring the rebound after Giuseppe Bellusci's chip hit the bar.
Town had plenty of possession but were toothless in the final third.
Into the second half, defender Mark Hudson headed wide on two occasions from set plays while Jason Pearce was in the right place to block Nahki Wells shot from close range as he met Bunn's cross.
Bunn again provided a cut back after jinxing his way down the left flank but substitute Ward saw his shot blocked by Leeds defenders.
Leeds sealed the win on 69 minutes when Austin sent Doukara through on goal and the striker cut inside to beat Hudson and lash the ball into the bottom corner of the net.
Bunn's trickery and persistence forced Berardi into a rash challenge which led to him receiving a second yellow card on 73 minutes.
Substitute Jon Stead wasted a good chance to grab a consolation goal for the visitors but he could only fire over from 12 yards after being set up by Wells.
It could have been worse as Leeds caught Town on the break again but Smithies just got enough on Antenucci's shot to stop Town conceding a fourth.
